Oud—or agarwood—is the most precious and fascinating ingredient in oriental perfumery. Known as “liquid gold,” it can be worth more than gold by weight.
What Is Oud?
Oud (Arabic: عود) is an aromatic resin produced by the Aquilaria tree when it is infected by a particular fungus. In response, the tree produces a dark, intensely fragrant resin—this is agarwood.
Fewer than 2% of Aquilaria trees naturally produce oud. That is why it is among the most expensive raw materials in the world (up to €100,000/kg for the finest qualities).
The Olfactory Profile of Oud
Oud is difficult to describe because it varies greatly depending on its origin:
- Indian oud — animalic, earthy, deep, very intense
- Cambodian oud — softer, fruity, floral
- Arabian / Gulf oud — woody, smoky, resinous, warm
- Synthetic oud — accessible, less complex but excellent in perfumery
