Bakhoor: The Complete Guide to Oriental Incense

|Stéphane LE MOAL

Bakhoor is one of the most deeply rooted olfactory rituals in Arab and Gulf culture. Burned in homes, offered to guests, and used to perfume clothing—it is much more than simple incense.

What Is Bakhoor?

Bakhoor (بخور) is an oriental incense made from agarwood (oud) wood chips infused with essential oils, musk, rose, and other aromatic ingredients. It is burned in a traditional incense burner called a mabkhara.

Unlike Western incense, bakhoor is not burned down to ash—it is placed on a small glowing charcoal tablet or in a modern electric burner, releasing dense, long-lasting aromatic smoke. → Oud / Agarwood Guide

The Origins of Bakhoor

The practice of using bakhoor dates back more than 3,000 years in the Arabian Peninsula. It was used in temples, royal palaces, and homes to purify spaces and honor guests. Today, offering bakhoor to guests remains a highly important gesture of hospitality in Gulf culture.

How to Use Bakhoor

Perfuming Clothing

The most popular method in the oriental tradition. Hold your clothes over the mabkhara for 1 to 2 minutes. Textile fibers absorb the aromatic molecules and release a deep trail throughout the day—often for 12 to 24 hours. → Oriental Perfume Ritual

Perfuming Your Home

Burn bakhoor in the living room or entryway to welcome your guests with a warm, enveloping trail. The scent lingers for several hours in textiles such as curtains, cushions, and sofas.

Layering Base

In the oriental tradition, bakhoor forms the first fragrance layer—the deepest and longest-lasting. Your EDP is then sprayed over it for an incomparable multilayered trail. → Beginner's Layering Guide
