Arabic perfume: how to choose according to your tastes?

|Stéphane LE MOAL
Parfum arabe : comment choisir selon vos goûts ?

How do you choose an Arabic perfume? Start with your tastes, then compare the fragrance family, intended use, season, format and product-page information. This method helps you move from a preference - vanilla, musk, oud, floral, woody, amber or fresh - to a more precise selection.

For a selection focused solely on the scents you enjoy, also see our guide by fragrance preference.

1. Start with what you already love

Identify the fragrances you already enjoy wearing and the families that recur in your preferences.

  • Gourmand: vanilla, caramel, praline, coffee or fruits.
  • Clean and soft: musk, white flowers and powdery accords.
  • Warm: amber, vanilla and spices.
  • Woody: oud, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver or patchouli.
  • Fresh: citrus, aromatic or green notes.

Our guide to fragrance families helps refine this initial reference point.

2. Choose your fragrance profile

Woody and oud

Woody profiles can be dry, creamy, warm, smoky or resinous. Oud can enhance this direction with facets that vary depending on the composition.

See our guide to oud and agarwood and our guide to choosing an oud fragrance.

Musk and clean notes

Musky profiles can evoke cleanliness, powder, creamy softness or complement flowers and woods.

Discover the guide to musk in oriental perfumery.

Amber and warmth

Amber accords can be resinous, vanilla-like, spicy, woody or musky.

See the amber guide.

Floral

Rose, jasmine, orange blossom and white flowers can produce fresh, powdery, musky, spicy or more opulent results.

Gourmand

Vanilla, caramel, praline, coffee, honey, or fruit create profiles that are often sweet and warm.

Fresh and aromatic

Citrus, green, and aromatic notes provide a brighter direction, sometimes combined with woods or musks.

3. Adapt the fragrance to the occasion

Context Profiles to explore Point to note
Everyday Musky, fresh, floral, light woody Choose an easy-to-wear profile
Work Fresh, aromatic, musky, balanced woody Prefer a measured dosage
Evening Amber, gourmand, woody, oud, spicy Adapt it to the setting and proximity
Special occasion Floral, amber, oud, gourmand Test how it develops before the planned day

4. Consider the season

Fresh, citrusy, and aromatic profiles are often sought in hot weather. Amber, woody, spicy, and gourmand profiles are often explored when seeking a warmer sensation. These are guidelines, not absolute rules.

5. Don’t confuse concentration with longevity

Extrait, eau de parfum, and eau de toilette correspond to different formulations. Concentration does not guarantee a specific duration on all skin types. Longevity depends in particular on the composition, the skin, the dosage, the temperature, and the wearing conditions.

For more information, see the guide to fragrance concentrations and the glossary of oriental perfumery.

6. Look at the fragrance pyramid

Top, heart, and base notes describe an announced evolution. They serve as a reference point, but do not necessarily constitute an exhaustive list of the formula or its proportions.

See our guide to the fragrance pyramid.

7. For men, women, or unisex?

These categories are commercial guidelines. To choose, focus mainly on the ratings, the fragrance family, and the overall style of the fragrance.

8. How do you choose a fragrance house?

Lattafa, Afnan, Armaf, Swiss Arabian, Maison Alhambra, Rasasi, Al Haramain, and other houses offer very different profiles. A house cannot be reduced to a single product.

Consult our guide to oriental perfume houses.

9. If you are hesitating between two perfumes

  1. Compare their fragrance families.
  2. Look at the notes they share and their differences.
  3. Compare concentration and format.
  4. Consider the context in which you will wear them.
  5. Test both on your skin whenever possible.

10. Move from the guide to the catalog

Once you have identified your profile, compare exact products rather than choosing solely based on a brand name.

Find more profiles in the Vanilla & Gourmand collection and the full catalog in all our perfumes.
