Musky Notes: Everything You Need to Know

|Stéphane LE MOAL

Musk is one of the oldest and most universal ingredients in perfumery. In oriental perfumery, it occupies a central place—as a base note, fixative, and distinctive olfactory signature in its own right.

What Is a Musky Note?

Musky notes are aromatic molecules that evoke warmth, softness, and sensuality. They generally form the base note of a fragrance—the last to be perceived, the longest-lasting, and the one that leaves the final trail on the skin.

The Different Types of Musk

White Musk

The most common in modern perfumery. Soft, clean, powdery. A universal base note that harmonizes with everything. It is the foundation of Musk Tahara.

Animal Musk (Natural)

Obtained from the musk gland of the musk deer. Warm, sensual, and highly persistent. Today, it has been replaced by synthetic alternatives for ethical reasons, but major oriental houses use bases inspired by natural animal musk.

Amber Musk

Musk + amber = enveloping warmth. Very common in oriental perfumery, it creates that characteristic warm and resinous signature. → Musk & Amber Collection

Oud Musk

Musk + oud = maximum depth. A base note in major oriental masculine and unisex compositions. → Oud / Agarwood Guide

Fruity / Gourmand Musk

Musk + fruity or sweet notes = an addictive, modern trail. Very popular on TikTok with coconut vanilla musk Tahara combinations.

Why Musk Is Essential for Layering

Musk is the best natural fixative in perfumery. Applied as a base, it:

  • Extends the longevity of fragrances applied over it
  • Harmonizes the different olfactory notes
  • Creates a natural blend between the layers
  • Personalizes the trail according to your skin chemistry
